“DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Chapter 6

Previously in “DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Detective Andy Heppelthwaite has begun questioning the OAR players and other people held in the building. He has also discovered the word “MURDER” written on a discarded piece of paper.
Chapter 6
6:1 “It just answer to crossword clue”, protested petite Vla. “Yuri make them to help my English while Nobby fine tune wind – it take long time”
6:2 Lucy Merill was writing a damage-limitation press release. “Like the glass hall in which it rehearses, OAR is committed to transparency…“
6:3 Local MP George North stood over Luce, dripping coffee on her expensive shoulder pads “It should read METROTON’S OWN COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA”
6:4 “But Reason Orchestra is a band of elite artists, not a bunch of amateur musicians” objected marketeer Matt Noir. “I can’t sell that”.
6:5 “Your problem Matty. I built my political career promoting this project for local people“ said North. “Community Orchestra stays, or you go”
6:6 “Where the **** is Metroton?” shot LM at his departing bulk. “We’re rebranding the town Luce. City sophistication meets Anglo-Saxon passion”
6:7 Meanwhile, in the basement, police locum MO Judith Sager has noticed some unexpected bruises on Sonia’s arms. CID’s Andy H has been called.

“DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Chapter 5

Previously in “DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Several of the orchestral players have already revealed reasons for having a grudge against the deceased Sonia. A picture emerged of a fragile, talented young woman living away from the support of her family, who might well feel alienated enough to consider taking her own life.
Chapter 5
5:1 Police cars and ambulances cordoned off Reason Hall, turning it into a crime scene. CID officer Andrew Hepplethwaite began to ask questions.
5:2 Upstairs, answers were politely short. “No, Sonia wasn’t a drug user” “Yes, she could be volatile” “No, she wasn’t in financial difficulty”
5:3 Downstairs, they were less careful. “Nobody does this job without occasional chemical assistance” was Charity‘s contribution to the debate.
5:4 “Volatile, did they say? Is that what the Politically Correct brigade call mentally unstable?” Mark Dicks was riding a favourite hobby horse.
5:5 Mary Anne thought money problems were unlikely, “With her parentage? Did you see the clothes she wore? Try buying those on our salary.”
5:6 “Thank you all for your assistance. We’ll try not to detain you any longer than strictly necessary”. Andy H wanted to keep everyone calm.
5:7 “I think you dropped this”, the CID officer retrieved a piece of paper from under Viola’s wheelchair. On it was written one word – MURDER

"DEAFEN THE MAIDEN" – Chapter 4

Previously in “DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – It seems that not all of the musicians in the Orchestra of the Age of Reason were well disposed to the recently deceased Sonia Said. Personal rivalries, artistic differences and scandal-mongering gossip flourished as normal whilst everyone thought that the young violinist had simply gone missing, but the tone changes as they assess the seriousness of the situation.
Chapter 4
4:1 Opinions amongst her shocked colleagues were hastily revised when news filtered through that Sonia was not temporarily indisposed, but dead.
4:2 “Poor girl. So fragile. So far from her family“, emoted a tearful Mary Anne unwrapping a sweet, “I thought I heard an ambulance outside.”
4:3 “Or police. They’ll be involved now. I hope nobody had a grudge against Son“, declaimed Nobs Major pointing his baton at Charity Constance.
4:4 “She had one against me. Calling Daddy moaning about being treated as a sex object instead of a serious artist” blared trumpeter Mark Dicks.
4:5 Viola Scherzo, stranded mid-orchestra in a wheelchair, pondered Yuri’s scribbled crossword clue: 1d RED RUM RUNS BACKWARDS. IT’S A CRIME
4:6 Rob Simple to girlfriend Jo again: “Sorry, 2 b = L8er. Sms lk Son’s killed self. Devst8d. B& @ 6s & 7s. Guilt x n. Let Dave know. XXX R.”
4:7 But DillTech’s PR Lucy Merill, could still not see beyond tomorrow‘s headlines. “Oh ******* ****””, she expanded, “Even worse press”.

“DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Chapter 3

Previously in “DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – There is a lock-in at Reason Hall, rehearsal venue of the Orchestra of the Age of Reason. American oboist Natalie Katz discovered the body of beautiful Palestinian violinist Sonia Said and assumed suicide. CEO Jim Winter is waiting for the paramedics and police to arrive. The players and administrative staff, trapped in the building, are beginning to assess the situation.
3:1 Within minutes, everyone thought they knew why they were trapped in a giant glass vegetable and had a theory to explain Son’s indisposition.
3:2 “Attention grabbing. Expected from a spoilt little vixen”. Bitter violinist Mary Anne Nicol had lost her prized 2nd desk to the more decorative Sonia.
3:3 Barny Quinn was more sympathetic. “I wondered why she wasn’t at rehearsal and assumed that she was off-colour … or working at her Bach again.”
3:4 “Wouldn’t need to need to work at it … if she’d learnt to play properly in the first place”, opined Mary Anne between bites of chocolate.
3.5 “Ah, the bed doesn’t make itself”. Gay bassist Yuri Jones communicated exclusively in enigmatic aphorisms and cryptic crossword clues.
3:6 Trinidadian horn player Charity Constance seized on the innuendo. “Maybe cubby-holed with Jen, our esteemed music-in-the-community supremo”
3:7 “Oh, ****.“ groaned DillTech’s PR guru Lucy Merill, trapped in conference with the orchestra’s Head of Marketing, Mat Noir. “More bad press”

“DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Chapter 2

Previously in “DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – Beautiful, much desired and much envied Palestinian violinist Sonia Said, the newest recruit to the string section of Norbert Major’s Orchestra of the Age of Reason is unwell.
Chapter 2
2:1 But this popular young woman would turn heads no longer. She was lying dead in a sound-proofed cell where she had spent so many hours alone.
2:2 Natalie Katz found her. The American oboist, looking for a free room to trial some new fingerings, screamed on seeing Sonia’s twisted body.
2:3 Nobody responded: (the sound-proofing was particularly effective), so it was some minutes before Chief Executive James Winter was informed.
2:4 Natalie went to the top floor by lift (an oddly non-urgent choice) then burst into JW’s office emoting “It’s Sonia. She’s killed herself”.
2:5 Jim spoke calmly into the PA system. “There has been an unexpected upset. Please stay in the building until the emergency services arrive.”
2:6 As a precaution, Jim pressed a button marked “Automatic shut-in”. The doors to the outside world locked electronically with a pianissimo click.
2:7 Rob Simple, bassoonist and OAR’s resident comedian texted his girlfriend. “Sorry L8 home. Dildo clsd. Son’s probly locked self in WC again”

“DEAFEN THE MAIDEN” – A twittertale

1:1 She was a pretty girl (enemies admitted that) but didn’t look it pressed in a corner of a practise room, vomit dribbling from her mouth.
1:2 The girl was Sonia Said, daughter of a Palestinian diplomat who insisted on a liberal education which included learning to play the violin.
1:3 The practice room was in a hall purpose-built for the Orchestra of the Age of Reason: a specialist band led by the charismatic Norbert Major.
1:4 Sonia was the newest member of the orchestra. She had auditioned well and “Nobs” thought an attractive middle-eastern girl good for business.
1:5 Reason Hall, OAR’s rehearsal venue, built at public expense, sponsored by DillTech, was courgette-shaped. Locals called it “the Dilldome”.
1:6 Barny Quinn (1st vln) was less convinced than Nobs by Son’s musical qualities but was drawn to her romantically, as were many other players.
1:7 Admin staff also were also captivated, particularly Jen Singer, Director of Outward Sound, whose attention Sonia found especially unwelcome.
