Cobweb News 10 – 16.04.14

Dear all,
As you all will know by now, I have taken over from Sue as Events Administrator for Cobwebs! My name is Lorna, and some of you may know me as the one that sits behind the Music Education Centre reception desk at Sage Gateshead. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, probably at The Big Play in Middlesbrough Town Hall on Easter Monday… more about that later…
There was a very fitting and lovely good bye to Sue at the Sedburgh residential a few weekends ago, and I’d personally like to thank her for the smooth handover – I can only wish to be as organised as her! We all wish her well for her exciting travels.
The Cobwebs Chamber Orchestra performed a fabulous concert at the beautiful Preston Park last Saturday to a sell-out crowd. There were some fantastic comments from the audience and staff at the museum about how delightful the orchestra sounded. I particularly enjoyed the authentic start to the Marriage of Figaro; having the audience chatter away until the striking chord in the 12th bar or so, composed to shut the audience up!
Monday 21st April – The BIG PLAY
11.00am – 7.00pm
Middlesbrough Town Hall, Albert Road TS1 2QJ

We have our annual Big Play next Monday at Middlesbrough Town Hall. There’s a great orchestra signed up already but it’s vital, since it’s my first event, that I know that you’re intending to come.
It would therefore help me greatly if you could complete the enrolment form (available on the website) and either email it to me or post it to:
146 Ellesmere Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 8TR.
Important Information about The Big Play…
– Clarinets, we have a fair few pieces that require an A Clarinet part so we wanted to let you know that you should bring both if you have it so you can play in more pieces!
-You’ll see we’re playing Mahler’s 4th Symphony. We don’t have a huge set of music for this one, so, if you haven’t already been rehearsing this at Consett and would like to join in (which we hope you do), could you download and print a part for your instrument from:,_Gustav)
– Elizabeth (Consett violin and Trustee) will be running a raffle and would be grateful for the donation of any extra prizes. Just bring items on the day.
– BIG INSTRUMENTS. It’s always possible to unload these from the cobbles directly outside the Hall. Usually, it’s also possible to obtain a parking permit from the Town Hall staff which means that you can leave your vehicle there all day.
– I have been contacted by Jonathan Bloxham (who is conducting a study day on Sibelius Violin Concerto with us in May) to offer Cobweb players a special ticket offer for the Northern Chords Festival, running 26-30th May. I will have tickets for this event on the Monday evening: for a price of £5 each! Tickets are normally £12 so this really is a great deal for us and we’d love to support Jonathan as much as possible. I will be selling these tickets at The Big Play during the tea time break so do come and grab me! If you’re not at the Big Play and you’d like me to put one aside for you, just let me know.
That’s all this, keep an eye out next week for a flurry of events you can enrol for and enjoy but for now I hope to see you on Monday for what is going to be a fantastic day!
Best wishes,
