Dear all,

We’ve got a good sized orchestra already for this, but it’d be lovely for Chris to work with as many of you as possible. Please do enrol soon so we can plan for how much music to bring. As part of the day we will enjoy a shared lunch so please do contribute if you wish.

Baroque Group – call for players!
Some of you may not know about the Cobweb Baroque Group. We are a string group that plays music from the Baroque period, mainly concerti grossi, by the likes of Handel, Corelli, Scarlatti and Vivaldi. All string players are welcome, and we currently particularly need violins and violas. We meet on a Tuesday evening 7 – 9pm at St. Giles Church, Gilesgate, Durham. If you have any questions, please email Hope to see some new faces soon!

A Non-Residential
A few words from Andy about an event in August.
You may have noticed an event at Wylam on the weekend of 27/28 August which I’m calling our Summer Non-residential weekend: two days of playing music in a pretty village on the North banks of the Tyne, but without accommodation. For people who live further than a day’s travelling away, we’ll see if people living close might offer a bed for the night. We did this in Kirkby Stephen some years ago and it worked well.
The thinking behind this is that, as we don’t have a foreign trip this year, it would be good for players to spend time together for longer than our usual study days and get to know a piece or two in more depth.
As to what pieces we’ll play… well, that will depend on who signs up. If we end up with a symphony orchestra, it will be something like Tchaikovsky or Elgar or Sibelius, but a smaller ensemble might tackle Schubert or early Beethoven. We’ll see.
Whatever we play, there will be all the shared meals and drinks and camaraderie and informal music-making normally associated with longer Cobweb events. An enrolment form will be out shortly, so get it in your diaries if you’re interested.

That’s all this week, looking forward to seeing many of you on Saturday with Chris.
Best wishes,
Event Co-ordinator, Cobweb Orchestra
