Cobweb News 14 – 16.05.14

Dear all,
I hope you’re enjoying the nice weather, let’s hope it lasts for a while! It was a great success last weekend with Richard Howarth looking at Shostakovich Symphony No.10, as written by Julie Ratcliffe:
Thirty six intrepid players sat down in Dalston last Saturday to wrestle with Shostakovich 10 and actually managed to pull it off. Richard Howarth did an excellent job of knocking us into shape and had just the right touch, combining coaching and encouragement with humour. There was a great sense of achievement after the final play-through, in that we’d tackled such a monumental work and it hadn’t beaten us – in fact we’d nailed it!
Upcoming Events:
Saturday 17th May– Guinea Pig Orchestra, Composers and Arrangers group and Aspiring Conductors
11.00am – 4.00pm Eldon Community Centre, Main Road, Bishop Auckland, DL14 8XB

Our next event is tomorrow at Eldon Community Centre with the Guinea Pig Orchestra. If anyone was finding themselves at a loose end as to what to do, please do come along – it’s free to play! And if that’s not tempting enough, the community centre staff are putting on a hot lunch of pie & peas for just £1.80…
Sunday 18th May– Cabaret Ensemble Performance
7pm, The Old Church, Church Parade, Sacriston DH7 6AD.

Tickets are £5 with profits going to humanitarian aid in Syria.
There’s still time to email for more information and to buy tickets.
Saturday 24th May – Sibeilus Violin Concerto with Jonathan Bloxham and Matthieu van Bellen (violin)
11.00am – 4.00pm, Dipton Community Centre, Front Street, Stanley, DH9 9DR

Internationally renowned and rising stars as part of The Busch Ensemble, Jonathan Bloxham and Matthieu van Bellen are two extremely talented and recognisable musicians who we are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with, and not an event to be missed! Matthieu began playing when he was 4 years old, and an education at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal College Music, London have really set him up to be a fantastic soloist. You can read more of his biography here:
We would really like a full orchestra to not only support Mattheiu and Jonathan but to get the best attempt at the Sibelius Violin Concerto as possible. The work itself is a virtuosic show piece and is the only concerto Sibelius wrote. Do let me know as soon as possible if you’re planning to attend this event – enrolment form is attached. We particularly need Violas, Flutes and Brass!
For all other upcoming events, do check the website or contact me directly with queries.
In other news…
A Cobwebber this week introduced me to the Cobweb Car-Sharing Link:
Please do keep using this – I know I will now if any of you ask about lifts. It’s a brilliant idea that saves petrol and money! If anyone has any problems accessing it, do let me know and I will add your request/offer to the list.
Once again, I still have cheap Northern Chords tickets for Monday 26th May – do email me/see me at Dipton for these! Have a look at the rest of the festival week where you can see Matthieu and Jonathan in action:
Best wishes,
