Cobweb News 18: 15/06/2014

Dear all,
Lizelle Kirby led what proved to be a very informative and interesting Score Reading workshop last Saturday to inspired and grateful participants. We hope to do more ‘hands-on’ workshops in the future for those who are interested.
Next Saturday is the study day for Schubert Symphony No 9 with Andy in Billingham. I know a lot of you have mentioned in passing that you’re interested in this, but please do let me know if you’re intending on coming! This is especially important for this event as we need to source appropriate parts for you all. We have available beginners parts for this work, and it’s a great opportunity for those of you who are maybe less confident to come and have a go at this fantastic piece! But because of this, we need to know which parts are necessary to have with us on the day so its vital you let me know. The enrolment form is available to download from the event webpage:
Saturday 21st June
Study Day: Schubert Symphony No. 9 with Andy Jackson
11am – 4pm, St. Aidan’s Church, 12a Tintern Avenue, Billingham, TS23 2DE
£10 – Members
£13 – Non members
Phil (our Treasurer) says that “Schubert is the most profitable composer”, but that’s not why we’re playing his Symphony No. 9 (the “Great” C major) on 21st June in Billingham, it’s because we have specially prepared simplified parts for all instruments so that anyone who can’t manage what Schubert wrote can still be involved.
So why not join Andy Jackson for a study day on the ‘Great’ Schubert Symphony No.9. Often considered Schubert’s finest piece for orchestra, this symphony is also one of the composer’s most innovative pieces. As it is Schubert’s last symphony that he wrote, the piece really excels in majestic qualities, giving it its ‘Great’ reference. As part of the day we will enjoy a shared lunch. Please, as usual, refer to the food hygiene guidelines when thinking about the shared lunch:
Sunday 13th July
Study Day: Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 with Peter Wood
Time tbc. Wylam Institute, Church Rd, Wylam, Northumberland, NE41 8AP
£10 – Members
£13 – Non members
Peter Wood leads us through this epic and ever-popular symphony written in early 20th Century. We’d love a full orchestra for this one, as it is such a big work, so will welcome anyone and everyone who’s up for the challenge! As part of the day we will enjoy a shared lunch.
Please see enrolment form on the event webpage. I am just checking the time of this event but we anticipate it to be another 11-4.30pm day with a shared lunch. I will confirm this next week!
