Cobweb News 21: 21.07.14

Dear all,
Sorry it’s been a while since I last sent a Cobweb News, I’ve been busy moving house! So, my new address to send all things events related to is:
57 Netherby Drive
Fenham
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE5 2RT
I’ll try and change it on all enrolment forms and remind you all for the next few weeks. I will still be able to get mail from the old place for a while so it’s ok if you’ve recently sent something but if mail could now be sent above i’d really appreciate it.
So, last weekend saw Peter Wood working through Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 with a 40-odd strong orchestra! Julie Ratcliffe gave her account of the day:
A fantastic study day on Rachmaninov’s second symphony for the second time in 2014, the year it came out of copyright. Conducted by Peter Wood and led by Elizabeth Beer, the orchestra managed to negotiate this luscious but tricky work with considerable success. In the play through at the end of the session we completed the symphony in an hour and five minutes, so not too far under speed, and the final movement was glorious – a real hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment. And I’m sorry fiddles, I know it was not an easy play for you, but the horn section had a ball!
Upcoming Events:
Saturday 2nd August
SAGE GATESHEAD
Cobweb Beginners Day

1.30pm – 7pm
http://www.cobweborchestra.org.uk/events/event.php?id=217
Have you always wanted to play in an orchestra but didn’t know where to start? Or do you know someone who needs an opportunity to get back into orchestral playing? This day playing specially arranged music by Mozart, Handel, Elgar and others will encourage everyone to make the most of their musical ability and give an informal presentation of progress made for friends and family at the end of the day (6pm) start.
Some people have been asking if it’s OK to come along to try out their second (or third, fourth…..) instrument. Of course – this would be the perfect place to start playing it in company. Our instrument bank will not be at Sage Gateshead on that day, but if you’d like to borrow an instrument from it, let me know, and me know and I’ll see what can be arranged. To book on, please visit http://www.sagegateshead.com/event/cobweb-orchestra31675/ or call the Ticket Office on 0191 443 4661. Again, please do let me know if you intend on coming or if you have booked on already.

Finally, a note from Michael, our adopted composer!
Michael here – the cobwebs adopted composer! Lots of exciting things happening in terms of me writing for the underground orchestra, but I’m in need of some help regarding finding suitable, existing musical material for my first piece for the Victoria Tunnels. I’m going to modify two existing tunes to represent the tunnels history: one will be an old folk/mining tune, the second a world war two song with a Newcastle/NE connection. Does anyone have any ideas about either? I’ve been playing through folk songs and exploring WWII music, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated! My contact details are: michaelbetteridge@hotmail.com – Thanks!
That’s all for, I hope you’re all having a lovely start to the Summer break and that I’ll see some of you at the Summer Events.
Best wishes,
Lorna
