Cobweb News

Dear all,

I hope you and your families are well and perhaps enjoying the nice weather in your gardens. Just a couple of things this week, but I hope you will be uplifted by the developments of the ‘Cobweb Virtual Orchestra’!

A message from Peter Wood
A message from Andy about the Cobweb Virtual Orchestra
A message from Jim Dunleavy about the project: Cobwebs Virtual Play!

A short message from Peter Wood:
Hi everybody,
Some of you may have heard this news already, but it is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Keith Maclennan, one of our Dalston horn players, has died after being diagnosed with the Covid-19 virus. Keith was a regular and loyal member of our group over several years and his wit and wisdom, alongside his musical knowledge and ability, will be such a sad loss to our musical endeavours. I know he will be sorely missed by us all.
Stay safe and well,
Peter Wood
A message from Andy about the Cobweb Virtual Orchestra:
Dear players,
Some of you have already seen and been enthused by a project being put together by Jim Dunleavy (flute and violin, Tyneside and Ludworth groups):
Jim is creating the brand new CVO (Cobweb Virtual Orchestra), whose first performance will be the final section of Rossini’s Barber of Seville overture.
The performance will take place as soon as we have recruited an orchestra of the right number of players playing the right instruments, so please read Jim’s explanation below and, if you’re interested, enrol using the online form here.
The intention is to create a performance that has some of the ambience of a live event, so we are also recruiting audience members. If you have friends and relatives who might like to get involved (it will mainly involve clapping enthusiastically), please let them know so that they can enrol too. (Audience members should use the same form, writing “clapper” in the “instrument” box)
Lastly, If you are enjoying participating in Cobweb Orchestra activity and would like us to keep providing opportunities to get involved while current lockdown restrictions apply, you might like to support the orchestra by making a donation (which can be gift aided if applicable).
To make a donation, simply make a BACS payment using the following details: A/c: 65560297 Sort Code: 08-92-99 Reference: “CVO/your surname”. Please do not send a cheque to Lorna at this time.
I’ll look forward to seeing and hearing many of you on the virtual stage and in the virtual auditorium soon.
Best wishes,
A message from Jim about the project: Cobwebs Virtual Play!
Even in these very strange times when we can’t meet up in person, with a little ingenuity and technology we can still perform together as a group. A virtual play allows us to produce a group performance video without leaving our homes; very handy at the moment!
Participants will play their part at home, while watching a video of the conductor. The video soundtrack will be a prepared ‘click track’ to keep us all together which we will listen to through earphones or headphones. Everyone will video their performance on a smartphone or similar device. All the clips will be loaded into a video editor and joined together to create a composite video of the whole performance which will then be published via the various online media outlets used by the Cobweb orchestra.
So, you are invited to enrol for a place in our first Virtual Orchestra, but please make sure you have all the equipment required before enrolling. This means that you will need:
1) A broadband internet connection.
2) A printer or a tablet computer or iPad to access the sheet music.
3) One device that can play YouTube videos (such as a smartphone, a tablet or laptop) while you listen to the sound track using earphones or headphones
4) Another video/audio recording device (a tablet, laptop or PC with webcam)

You will be sent links to download both the sheet music and the video and audio versions of the click track and instruction videos showing key steps of the process of recording your performance.
You will also need to sign the agreement allowing the publication of your video and audio performance as part of the overall project.
Let’s make this happen!

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to seeing your sign up forms, a reminder that the link is here
Best wishes,
Event Coordinator, Cobweb Orchestra
