Cobweb News 30: 20.11.14

Dear all,
What a wonderful concert we had on Sunday at Sage Gateshead, every one did so well! Thanks to our ever-supportive audience and especially to Iona Brown who wowed us with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. It was, as always, a pleasure to play with her. Well done to all involved, it was a great success. Do check out the Facebook and Twitter pages for photos and comments.
Our Twitter name is @cobweborchestra – if you’re on there, please follow us! We now have a dedicated twitter team so we’re looking to really use it more to show off to the region what a brilliant organisation we are!

This Saturday will be the LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR CARMINA BURANA AT SAGE GATESHEAD
You can turn up on the day to sing or play. Apparently, there have been problems booking online, but it will be fine to pick up tickets from Sage Gateshead Box office.
People have been saying that they can’t decide whether to sing or play. Simple answer – do both: There are gaps when not all orchestral instruments are involved, so in have a vocal score and join in with the chorus
Even though I’m sure many of you are looking forward to playing in this glorious piece, very few of you have actually let me know that you intend coming!
We really would like to see a full orchestra for this day as it is such a large scale work. Do consider coming along and enjoying tackling this music.
Please drop me a line even though you may have already enrolled at Sage Gateshead Box Office. We need to know so that we bring the right music for this event, it’s going to be a fabulous study day challenging an epic work – don’t miss it

Join us for a lovely concert of festive favourites alongside the Durham Scratch Choir at Alnwick Gardens in December.
We will be playing in the foyer bit, so very much undercover!
Concert dress is the usual concert attire, white top, black bottoms and waistcoats, but please think extra warm clothing for this one!
Food will be bring your own or from the cafe there as there isn’t an awful lot of time.
The rehearsal will be between 10am -12 pm. Then we will have two 40 minute performances at 12.30 and again at 1.30 pm.
Please don’t forget to bring a music stand and some pegs to attach your music to the stand!

**Cobweb Auction**
We’re organising another auction to raise money for the orchestra and are looking for donations.
We’re especially looking for things which can be promised such as “String quartet to play at a wedding or other function.” “Gourmet meal for two at a posh restaurant.” “Hand-painted picture from a favourite photo.” “Pet-sitting for a week while you go on holiday.”
Things will also be very welcome. You know the sort of things: Faberge eggs, first editions of Dickens, an Amati violin (so long as it’s in playable condition)
Initial bidding will be done by e-mail starting in January 2015, with the auction going LIVE at next year’s BIG PLAY at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Sunday 22nd March.
We need to have all the donations by the end of this year, so please send descriptions of your promises/items to Elizabeth (eabeer@sky.com), who is putting together the catalogue. A nice picture might be helpful for items or promises. Please advise of any restrictions (for instance related to distance or dates) and give a low reserve price if you wish.
**Newcastle Sinfonietta Concert Offer**
Mark Edwards, who conducted the recent event in York tackling Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, is offering Cobweb members half price to his concert with Newcastle Sinfonietta. Playing the classic Beethoven Symphony No. 5, the concert is on Saturday 6th December, 7.30pm at King’s Hall, Newcastle University. The poster is attached for more information, please contact the orchestra directly if you’d like to reserve tickets: orchestra@newcastlesinfonietta.co.uk
That’s all from me, looking forward to seeing many of you on Saturday!
Best wishes,
Lorna
