Cobweb News 34 – 2013

Dear All,
I do hope you all enjoyed last weekend without a Cobweb event. That’s more or less it for free weekends between now and early December. The variety of study days and concerts coming up is quite amazing and I hope there will be many events that appeal to you.
This weekend . . .
Saturday 28th September – Concert at Trinity Church, Ashington.
Rehearsal: 2.00 – 6.00pm
Concert: 7.30pm

I’m delighted to say that we have got a lovely, well-balanced orchestra for our first concert of this term. There is still space for strings though and we really would welcome you if you can come and play. Email me if you would like to join us.
In preparation for the concert on Saturday, the Consett group will be rehearsing the concert items this Thursday at St Patricks Church Hall, Victoria Road, Consett, DH8 5LB, 7.15 – 9.15pm. It would be great to see you there if you are playing on Saturday.
Two new enrolment forms . . .
Sunday 27th October – Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 study day with Richard Howarth
Dipton Community Centre
11.00am – 4.00pm

This is a great opportunity to study a large, well-known symphonic work with a fantastic conductor who will bring a wealth of orchestral experience to the day, both as a professional player and conductor.
For further details please see the event webpage
Sunday 3rd November – Dvorak Cello Concerto Study Day with Andy Jackson
Soloist – Alice Jones
Wylam Institute
2.00 – 6.00pm

Alice Jones, our soloist in this concerto, which we are performing at the Sage Gateshead on 17th November, is coming up from London for this study day. Do enrol for this event if . . .

  • you are playing in the concert at the Sage Gateshead on 17th November
  • you would like to play this work with Alice, but are unable to make the concert
  • you unfortunately didn’t get a place in the orchestra for the concert

For further details please see the event webpage
Don’t forget to enrol for . . .
Sunday 6th October – Schubert Symphony No. 5 Study Day with Andy Jackson
Christ Church, Cockermouth
2.00 – 6.00pm

Our new adopted composer Michael Betteridge will be at this event and has sent the following message . . .
“Hello Cobwebbers! I’m very excited to be embarking on working with such a unique and exciting group of musicians. The challenge of working with an extremely varied group is something I’m going to relish! I have had a lot of experience working on projects which are not straight-forward ‘concert-hall’ projects, including two site-specific musicals (one in a restaurant and one on a tram) and a work with some other composers called ‘Mixed Media’ which involved choreographed musicians, dancers and pre recorded audio, set in the round. If I were to describe my music I would say it’s direct, fun, a little bit silly and, often, full of energy. I will be joining you on 6th Oct (with my sax!) to play Schubert 5 and look forward to meeting you then!

Saturday 12th October – Schumann Symphony No. 4 Study Day with Chris Griffiths
Eldon Community Centre, Bishop Auckland.
11.00am – 4.00pm

More information and the enrolment forms for both these events can be found on the website
That’s all for this week. I look forward to seeing lots of you at events over the coming weeks.
