Cobweb News 36 – 2013

We had the most amazing day in Cockermouth yesterday, playing Schubert’s delightful Symphony No. 5. It was lovely to see people who we haven’t seen for quite a while and also lots of new faces. We had an orchestra of 53 of which 13 were new to Cobwebs. Hopefully we’ll see some of the new players at other events or weekly rehearsals. I’m sure we will be back in that part of Cumbria in the near future.
Michael Betteridge, our adopted composer, joined us on his sax (after he dusted the cobwebs off!) for the whole of the study day and I’m sure he’ll now have a flavour of what The Cobweb Orchestra as an organisation is about. We’re looking forward to working with Michael as his composition for us unfolds.
Coming up . . .
Saturday 12th October – Schumann Symphony No. 4 Study Day with Chris Griffiths
11.00am – 4.00pm
Eldon Community Centre, Bishop Auckland

Please do come and join us for our final Schumann Symphonies study day with the wonderful conductor Chris Griffiths. Chris, co-principal horn with Northern Sinfonia, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a player and a conductor to all the events he does with the Cobweb Orchestra. I can guarantee you’ll have a fantastic day.
At the moment we have about 2 thirds of the orchestra we need to play Schumann 4 and astonishingly we don’t have a single bassoon or trumpet and only 1 trombone and 1 cello! We need more players in most sections, particularly strings. The enrolment form and more information about the day can be found on the event webpage
If you can’t download the form, a quick email to say you are coming will suffice.
Sunday 27th October – Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 with Richard Howarth
11.00am – 4.00pm
Dipton Community Centre.

Our orchestra for this study day is slowly growing in size. Don’t miss the opportunity to play this great work. The enrolment form can be downloaded from the website.
Saturday 9th November – Sibelius Symphony No. 2 with Jonathan Brigg
1.30 – 6.00pm
Haxby Memorial Hall, Haxby, York

Come and spend an afternoon looking at the best loved symphony of Sibelius, his Symphony No. 2, with Jonathan Brigg our super conductor of the York Cobweb Orchestra.
For further details please see the event webpage
Ridley Hall ‘DIY’ residential
Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December

This is almost fully booked so if you haven’t yet sent in your deposit or are still dithering as to whether to come to this fantastic residential, please get in touch very soon. I’d hate to have to turn you away. More information is available on the website.
That’s all for this week. I do hope that lots of enrolments for all our forthcoming study days, especially Schumann Symphony No. 4 next Saturday, find their way to Cumbria over the next few days.
