Cobweb News 38 – 2013

Dear All,
Only 9 weeks to go until Christmas and still lots of exciting Cobweb events to attend!
A new event . . .
Sunday 10th November – CD and Book Launch
2.00 – 4.00pm
The Old Church, Front Street, Sacriston, Co. Durham DH7 6AD

Did you know that The Cobweb Orchestra was 18 on 5th October 2013? Coincidentally, on that very date, The Cobweb Cabaret Ensemble was in a recording studio, but more about that in a minute.
To celebrate our coming of age Ruth Tanner (cellist, Consett group) has written a book all about the last eighteen years of our wonderful organisation. Many players and conductors have contributed in the form of articles and photos for the book, which will be launched at Sacriston Old Church on Sunday 10th November and I hope many of you will come to celebrate the organisation’s birthday.
While Ruth was writing the book, the Cabaret players were busy in a recording studio, making a CD called “Footloose and Puffin”. This is a collection of pieces that the Cabaret Ensemble play and perform at all sorts of events and their CD will be launched at the same time as the book.
A flier about the launch will be out shortly, along with an order form so that you can order a book or a CD or (lots of) both. Both the book and the CD will make great Christmas presents.
Coming up . . .
Sunday 27th October – Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 study day
11.00am – 4.00pm
Dipton Community Centre, DH9 9DR

We’ve a super orchestra coming together to study this great work on Sunday but we still need a flute/piccolo, 2 bassoons, 2 horns and a trumpet. Some more strings wouldn’t go amiss either. Of course everyone is welcome even if you play an instrument other than those I’ve just mentioned. More information and the enrolment form is available on the website
If you are able to join us please just send me an email –
Sunday 3rd November – Dvorak Cello Concerto study day
2.00 – 6.00pm
Wylam Institute, NE41 8AP

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to get to know Dvorak’s lovely Cello Concerto and to hear Alice Jones play it. There is still plenty of space in every section for lots more players, especially violins and violas.
Following on from the Dvorak study day with Alice and in preparation for the concert on 17th November in Hall 2, Sage Gateshead, there are a couple of weekly rehearsals that you might like to attend: –
Wednesday 13th November – Katherine Shears Room, Sage Gateshead
1.00 – 3.00pm

The Sage group will be rehearsing much of the repertoire that is for the concert and would be delighted to see anyone who wants to come and have a play.
Thursday 14th November – St Patricks Hall, Consett
7.15 – 9.15pm

The Consett group will be rehearsing the Cesar Franck Symphony in D minor. We have a harpist coming and it would be great to have a full orchestra.
The Cobweb Orchestra Website . . .
. . . has a new tab called “Performances”. This is where performances by The Cobweb Orchestra and off-shoot groups such as The Cabaret Ensemble, The Baroque Ensemble etc will be advertised. If you fancy a musical night out, then do keep an eye on this page. It would be lovely for all our groups to have the support of lots of Cobwebbers at their concerts.
I look forward to seeing lots of you at Dipton on Sunday.
