Having put on a couple of virtual performances which were light in both tone and musical content, we decided that it would be a worthwhile challenge to try something more serious. Allegri wrote his vocal acapella masterpiece Miserere in the 1630s and for over 130 years it was performed exclusively during Holy week in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Because transcriptions were not allowed, this transcendent composition was heard by very few people. Fortunately, the prohibition against copying the piece was lifted in 1770, since when arrangements have been made by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Andy Jackson, whose version has been a firm favourite with Cobweb players and audiences for many years. It has given us something to work at that is beautiful and profound. Steve Messam’s painstaking realisation of nearly 100 video clips has emphasised our better moments and subtly disguised a few things which didn’t go quite according to plan to create something which could be described as “Cobwebs on a good day”.
