This is the only weekly group which meets in the daytime and it attracts players of all levels of experience who manage to make themselves free for a couple of hours on a Wednesday afternoon.
Averaging between 30-40 participants, with most instruments represented, the ensemble is usually of symphony orchestra proportions and is happy to tackle almost anything from the orchestral repertoire of the last 250 years, such as Grieg, Dvorak, Holst, Mendelssohn, Chabrier, Malcolm Arnold and even Nielsen’s monumental 2nd Symphony ‘The Four Temperaments’. Another feature of this group are visits from guest soloist and conductors, including the Italian soprano Barbara Gentili. ‘Virtual Play Alongs’ were enjoyed on Zoom in 2021, with Andy using cards to show rehearsal marks and bar numbers!

Instead of meeting at St Matthews, we will move just along the road to Hawthorn Primary School to spend time with children who are learning to play instruments as part of the ‘In Harmony’ outreach project run by Sage Gateshead. We will chat to them and play music with them, possibly some Dvorak with simplified parts for the young players. The project is run by Lorna, who you all know, and here are a few words from her about her hopes for the day:
“The overall aim I’m seeing for the workshop is that the children gain an understanding that they don’t have to be a professional musician in order to continue playing music, and seeing that life-long love of music without it necessarily being a job. I think the aim for Cobweb Orchestra players is to share this knowledge and have a really different and valuable experience with some young people!”
As this is a different type of session, we realise not everyone may wish to participate, and we will not be charging players for this week. An extra week is being added to the term so that we still have our full number of sessions.
