Some of our trustees will be representing Cobwebs at the annual conference of the Culture Durham Meet 2018 on Thursday 22nd November from 1.30pm until 6pm at the World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral and at Durham University’s Palace Green Library.

Yes, it is happening in Ludworth! The Ludworth Group has received a grant of £3,550 from the Durham Community Foundation. This generous grant will help the group to grow, to attract new players from South East Durham and beyond to come and enjoy making music. The group focuses on music for less experienced players, although everyone is welcome. You may have been playing with Cobwebs for a while and wonder if you dare ask “what does that mean?” or “what is the conductor doing…?” This is your chance! We enjoy a range of music from classical to popular, and pieces written by Cobwebbers past and present.
Day: Tuesdays during term time

Our project to develop The Cobweb Orchestra at Ludworth has been funded by the E.ON Butterwick Moor Wind Farm Community Benefits Fund managed by County Durham Community Foundation
The Ludworth Group is still growing, and we’d like to welcome more people to join us. We were originally advertised as a group for ‘beginners’, but would now like to think of ourselves as a ‘training’ orchestra. Most players who come along already know how to make notes on their instrument, while others are Cobwebbers who are practising a different instrument. It’s an ideal opportunity for musicians to play in an ensemble, and to try different pieces of music, including some from the orchestral repertoire. As well as our usual weekly meetings, we will be having some additional Saturday ‘taster sessions’ for new and beginner players next year, leading to a summer concert on 13 July at Shadforth Church. We want to pass on our love of music to as many people as we can, and hopefully also inspire the next generation.

Congratulations to Judith Greene on becoming our new trustee following the resignation of David Wood. A huge thank you to Dave for everything that he has done to support Cobwebs during his 9 years as a trustee, the last 2 of which he was our Chair. Luckily he’s not leaving us altogether, so you will still get to see him with his viola.
Here are a few pictures from another fantastic Cobweb weekend. This year’s treats included the beautiful ‘Gran Partita’ wind serenade, ‘Sinfonia concertante’, oboe concerto and clarinet concerto, as well as three overtures and two symphonies. Special thanks to our guest soloists.
We’d like to invite other players, friends and family, to join us for our very last session of the summer term on 10 July. Music will include BBC arrangements of Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Russian Dance’, as well as Mozart’s ‘Ave verum corpus’, ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles, ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’ made famous by Edith Piaf, and the beautiful ‘Shuna’ by Lizelle Kirby, who used to conduct Morpeth Cobwebs. There will be opportunities for some audience participation, as we will have plenty of extra percussion available for ‘The Toy Symphony’. There’ll be drinks and nibbles, a raffle, a ‘name the bear’ competition (composers’ names, of course!) and possibly a fun music quiz. Everyone is welcome. Please come!
The Elvaston Ensemble (Chrissie, Anita, Tracy and Rye) had their very own concert in St Mary’s Church in Shincliffe to raise money for Ludworth Cobwebs and the ‘If U Care Share Foundation’. It was an enjoyable evening in a lovely setting.
Elvet Methodist Church presented a concert at Ushaw College in aid of Global Care Street Children in Guatemala City. British Flute Society winner Michael Cave performed very beautiful flute music and was also joined by fellow Cobwebbers, Chrissie Macgregor on flute and Tracy Reed on clarinet. The Cabaret Ensemble with Andy Jackson added their usual entertaining mix of music to the programme. The audience were also treated to prosecco and strawberries.
